NADA New York, the 12th annual art fair, is a bustling hub of creativity, but it can also feel like a mall with its overwhelming abundance of similar works. The fair showcases a range of artistic styles, from zany sculptures to subtle, cheeky pieces. Among the sea of trends and tropes, several artists stand out for their unique approaches and thought-provoking concepts.
One notable artist is Elena Roznovan, a California-based Moldovan artist. Her solo presentation at Central Server Works booth features a series of dimensional watercolor self-portraits embedded with personal items like fingernail clippings, breast milk, and strands of hair. Roznovan's work delves into the tension between medical regulations, systemic subjugation, reproductive labor, and bodily autonomy, using the visual and verbal languages of BDSM to convey these complex themes.
Another standout artist is Kelly Tapia-Chuning, a mixed-Indigenous Xicana artist. Her dismantled vintage serapes at Milk Moon Gallery booth unravel the colonial violence and Indigenous erasure that have shaped contemporary Mexican identity. Tapia-Chuning's deconstruction of the serapes is a powerful statement against the historical context of the garment.
Niniko Morbedadze's dream-like, folkloric illustrations at CH64 Gallery also caught my attention. The artist's soft hand and meticulous material handling create a sense of comfort in the absurd realms she explores. Emily Ponsonby's encaustic paintings, rooted in realism and intimacy, evoke a similar sense of comfort but with a hint of unease, as memories are experienced through someone else's eyes.
The Buenos Aires-based Piedras Galería booth showcased Jimena Croceri's cast bronze 'jewels' created from the negative spaces in the human figure. The subtlety and cheekiness of her work were refreshing. Teresa Giarcovich's layered tulle wall-hangings, hand-stitched with remarkable craftsmanship, added a touch of elegance to the fair.
Lastly, 95 Gallon Gallery at NADA Projects brought its entire venue, creating a smile-inducing experience for visitors. The fair's diverse range of artistic styles and thought-provoking concepts make it a must-visit event for art enthusiasts, offering a unique and engaging experience beyond the typical mall-like atmosphere.
